History of the Coulson Institute

The Coulson Institute was established in 2003 by Sandra Coulson. At that time, Sandra was thriving with her private practice in Orofacial Myology, but frustrated by her interactions with so many professionals in the field of dentistry, orthodontics and speech therapy. The field of Orofacial Myology had been viable for quite a long time, but it was still not well-known. Practitioners had little to no exposure with oral-myofunctional disorders and absolutely no practicum experience with it. It was from this frustration that Sandra's desire to create her Institute stemmed.

Sandra saw a tremendous need for cooperation among professionals to provide the population with the most efficient means of correction of detrimental orofacial habits, posturing problems related to the lips, tongue, jaw and respiratory system, abnormal neuromuscular responses associated with inappropriate mastication and deglutition, detrimental breathing patterns, hyper and hypo sensitivity of the orofacial complex, swallowing patterns associated with malocclusions, and facial and postural esthetics.

Sandra now has hundreds of students, taught over sixty introductory and advances courses and visited over twelve countries while doing so. It is her mission to take the field of Orofacial Myology to new heights, and with her help, the numbers are growing.

The Coulson Institute of Orofacial Myology provides training courses toward a certification process to help ensure that there is a high level of competence achieved by those who are certified and providing therapy.
