Certified Orofacial Myology Specialist

Our certification program offers behavioral solutions to a serious and neglected health issue facing millions of both children and adults. Western diet and lifestyle have profound effects on the growth and development of the face, lips, tongue, jaw, swallow, dentofacial, and orofacial muscle patterns. An estimated eight out of every 10 children exhibit learned dysfunctional patterns. If these anomalies are not addressed early in life, these patterns may become chronic health issues.

The 125 hour certification program (75 CE units, six academic units) includes coursework (45 hrs), case analysis proseminars (30 hrs), and practicum (50 hrs) that qualifies practitioners to: (1) assess oral posture and function and their effects on growth and development in the child, as well as address existing disorders in both adults and children; (2) train adults and children, who have developed dysfunctional patterns, to restore balanced functional oral posture based on the principles of behavior modification, and (3) to use the most effective means for assisting their clients in identifying and overcoming dysfunctional rest postures, breathing, chewing, swallowing, tongue function and body postural habits.

The Certificate program teaches colleague practitioners how to: (1) determine if there are dysfunctional orofacial myofunctional habits, (2) identify the learned behavioral components of dysfunctional habits, (3) identify the symptoms and deficits brought on by habits, (4) determine how existing health conditions may interact with the physiological effects of habits, (5) identify and rectify/eliminate factors that regulate these habits (e.g., cranial dysfunction, tethered oral tissues), and (6) teach clients how to restore functionality of the way they sit, stand, walk, talk, and sleep.
